Bachelor of Education + Master of Education -> Lehramt an beruflichen Schulen (Teaching at Vocational Schools)

The programme Lehramt an beruflichen Schulen at the Technical University of Darmstadt consists of two connected study programmes:

  • first, the Bachelor of Education programme (6 semesters; vocational field of study) and
  • subsequently, the Master of Education programme (4 semesters; subject of general education/subject studies).
  • In addition to methodical and didactical subjects, practical classroom training complements the programme.

Only the completion of both the Bachelor of Education and the Master of Education is equivalent to the first state examination in the state of Hesse and therefore mandatory for the admission to the preparatory period (teaching practice) or the teaching profession.

The professional field covered by the Körperpflege degree programme includes, for example, hairdressers, beauticians and make-up artists. However, the programme is also aimed at others who are interested in body sciences, fashion and aesthetics.

Body sciences analyse the body from different perspectives. Accordingly, the degree programme is divided equally between fashion and aesthetics as areas of art and cultural studies and biology and chemistry as areas of natural sciences. Pedagogical and didactic modules are also fundamental for the teaching profession.

The Chair of Fashion and Aesthetics, alongside the didactics of fashion and aesthetics/Körperpflege, is a unique feature of the body care/Körperpflege degree programmes in Germany, professionalising teacher training in this area.

A successful Bachelor's degree in Körperpflege can also form the basis for other Master's programmes that build on it, opening up a variety of study prospects, for example in business or the natural sciences.

Related vocational internship of a 52-week-minimum duration or related vocational training in accordance with the internship regulations. The vocational internship is to be fully completed and recognised by the competent departments before the start of the programme;

2. Requirements for admission to this degree programme are comprised of a related vocational 52-week internship; see next point “internship”.
3. When choosing Sports Science as a general education subject or as Master of Education: passing the Sports Aptitude Test is an admission requirement for the Sports Science modules (proof thereof by the end of the 4th semester); further information.
4. For some of the consecutive Master of Education programmes following the Bachelor of Education, there are further requirements for enrolment, e.g. foreign language skills. Therefore, please learn more about these courses of study early on.

For enrolment in the complementary teacher training programme, in particular you need to already have a First State Examination or an equivalent qualification such as Master of Education or you must be currently enrolled in a teacher training course (teaching profession at secondary schools, Bachelor of Education, Master of Education).

Complementary Studies – Teaching at Secondary Schools

  • Job opportunities for graduates of the Bachelor of Education can for example be found in corporate vocational training institutions, in the field of vocational training studies.
  • Entering the preparatory period (teaching practice) for teaching in the broad field of public vocational schools, however, is only possible after having completed the graduate degree programme Master of Education.

Predictions about the future demand for teachers or their employment opportunities are difficult to make as both depend on a number of different factors. This includes, for example, demographic development, the selected combination of subjects or the type of school, the political framework, etc.
